Elbow Pressure Balanced Expansion Joint
An Elbow Pressure Balanced Expansion Joint is intended to absorb externally forced axial movement without adding pressure to the system. This is performed by connecting two bellows at line pressure and acting in opposite directions. When pressure loading on piping or equipment is not acceptable, it is utilised.
The movement of the joint is unbalanced. In order to function, both the flow and balance bellows must be compressed or stretched, and the total axial spring force acts on the piping or equipment. Because the forces required to move the bellows of these joints are so small, they are usually not an issue.
These expansion joints are typically fitted at a direction change. They may also be intended for in-line use. When it comes to single Elbow joints, both the anchors at the end of the piping run and the one on the machine are intermediate anchors, and just directional guiding is necessary. The guide directly above the equipment can be designed to absorb the axial movement forces of the expansion joint without impeding the equipment. The only force applied to the equipment is that required to deflect the expansion joint.
